Strategies for Justice (SFJ) is an organization with a focus on issues of gender, disability, and racial equity within law enforcement. Through training and speaking engagements, including an annual symposium, SFJ hopes to unveil untold narratives of injustice from those working in policing that can inform reforms within the law enforcement community. SFJ’s mission is to provide the tools necessary to help individuals, social justice organizations, and institutions of higher education work in collaboration with law enforcement, to engage in civil dialogue, and to help create meaningful changes in the communities they serve. The goals of SFJ include passing equity-minded legislation, uncovering injustice through story-telling, and providing education and advocacy for the communities with whom we interact. This project focuses on the SFJ Symposium; the organization’s main event, in hopes that it may serve as a catalyst to continued conversation and execution of any call to action.

Analysis of Soil and Water Reuse at Little Leaf Farm /projects/analysis-of-soil-and-water-reuse-at-little-leaf-farm/ Fri, 25 Jul 2025 19:19:58 +0000 /?post_type=projects&p=19465 Read More... from Analysis of Soil and Water Reuse at Little Leaf Farm

Little Leaf Farms, a hydroponic greenhouse operation that grows lettuce, occupies about 160 acres of land on a mountaintop near Hazleton, PA. Its greenhouses do not cover all the land  and its operation produces nutritious peat and ‘waste’ water – water enriched with nutrients for growing the lettuce. Little Leaf is interested in learning how to utilize these byproducts towards its ultimate goals of sustainable campus beautification over the next 5-10 years post greenhouse construction. For this projects students’ research include analysis of water and soil and identification of appropriate plants tolerant of these conditions. Research also include best practices for the establishment of a pollinator meadow or any other recommendations.

2024 Comprehensive Plan Update – Economic Development Element for the City of Snohomish /projects/2024-comprehensive-plan-update-economic-development-element-for-the-city-of-snohomish/ Mon, 12 Aug 2024 19:25:19 +0000 /?post_type=projects&p=18248 Read More... from 2024 Comprehensive Plan Update – Economic Development Element for the City of Snohomish

The purpose of this project is to support the economic development element of the 2024 comprehensive plan update, starting with the design and implementation of a business survey. This scientific survey should seek to understand who Snohomish’s business owners are, what challenges and/or opportunities they face, and how the City of Snohomish can be of assistance. Special care will be taken to address the issues of redundant broadband access, childcare and mental health services, parking and downtown transportation, and commercial affordability – which are some of the priorities of the Snohomish City Council and City staff. The survey results will then be used to conduct a SWOT (strength, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis of the Snohomish economy, leveraging other information as necessary (e.g., the economic data profile already compiled by the City, zoning and land use regulations, regional industry clusters) to best inform goals and policies for the economic development element.

Several programs have worked on this project to help the City of Snohomish update the economic development of their comprehensive plan. Master of Business Administration students at UW Tacoma conducted a survey of small businesses and a SWOT analysis in the Fall 2023 quarter.

SDSU students conducted a Sustainability Gap (SGAP) Assessment report to identify improvement strategies for the “assessed” establishments in the City of National City. The assessed establishments where the Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel, Goodies Bar & Grill, The Pier 32 Marina, and Ethnic Deli and Café. The overall goal of this Sustainability Assessment assignment is long-term, mainly focusing on a strategy and best practices for the development of a possible “Green Tourism Corridor” in National City, which might also be of branding interest to National City’s Tourism Marketing District (TMD).

Students followed the ABCD Method to applying the Natural Step Framework that consists of four steps which are repeated as an organization progresses toward sustainability. The four steps are as follows: Awareness and Visioning, Baseline Mapping, Creative Solutions, and Deciding on Priorities (The Natural Step, 2011). The following student-recommended solutions were designed to meet criteria for the Sustainable Tourism Eco-certification Program (STEP).

Recommendations made for the Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel and Goodies Bar & Grill include creating a written energy reduction plan and providing the means for clients to contribute to local or international conservation-based initiatives. Both businesses demonstrate a good understanding of sustainability and its implications. Goodies Bar & Grill also expressed interest in creating an on-site vegetable garden but lacked a written plan. Students responded by providing specific instruction for building a raised bed for a vegetable garden.

In addition, The Waterfront Grill at Pier 32 and Ethnic Deli and Cafe have to work on creating a business plan that provides the means for employees and management to encompass a common vision for their businesses. The plan needs to follow the SMART principles (sustainable, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based), which are key to reaching a successful management target. Along with the business plan, the establishment of a green team that will carry out the vision of sustainability and execute the “green” policies is essential. These and other recommendations bring the assessed businesses closer to the STEP Eco-certification Program.

The research in this report was created through a partnership between the City of Lemon Grove and the Sage Project at San Diego State University during the spring of 2017. This research was completed by students in an upper division Public Administration class, titled Nonprofit Organizations and Government. This work sought to understand how the City of Lemon Grove could best meet emerging needs of the growing population and diverse community within the city. The goals of the city included collecting data from individuals about their perceptions and preferences regarding such topics as safety, parks and recreation (including amenities and use), community gardens, public art and Lemon Grove’s overall image. This report details data that were collected through a survey of residents and non-residents of Lemon Grove. The data were analyzed to determine specific unmet or under-addressed needs of the city. Needs that were identified included: community gardens and increased nature in public spaces; parks and family-oriented play areas; community and youth events; safety concerns; senior resident social services; and homelessness. The goal of this research was to identify viable partnerships between the City of Lem-on Grove and local nonprofit organizations within the San Diego County area. Survey results, in conjunction with the specific needs expressed by the City of Lemon Grove, allowed us to assess the community needs and identify potential partners with a data-driven approach. Potential nonprofit partnerships were determined for each unmet or under-addressed need that was identified. The recommendations for nonprofit partnerships were those deemed to be most appropriate and beneficial for the City of Lemon Grove. Keywords: nonprofit organizations, community needs, placemaking, senior residents, parks and recreation, homelessness
