]]> The City of New Albany is committed to a quality parks and recreation system that delivers high-quality parks, trails, recreation programs, facilities, and events for all residents, while contributing to the economic well-being of the City. Faculty and students conducted research to provide a guide for future growth and development of New Albany’s parks and recreation system.

]]> In collaboration with LumberKings General Manager Ted Tornow, the Downtown Clinton Alliance, and the City of Clinton, two graduate students in Sports & Recreation Management explored ways to strengthen connections between the baseball organization and downtown Clinton. The students developed several recommendations designed to both support operations for the LumberKings, with the ultimate goal of boosting attendance, and to increase economic activity downtown through marketing of existing businesses and recruitment of new businesses.

]]> Boone County Conservation sought to explore the feasibility of constructing a disc golf course at Don Williams Park. Disc golf continues to grow in popularity across the United States and is becoming one of the premier recreational sports. It is minimally invasive to the environment, needing little land alteration to construct and no harmful chemicals or practices to maintain. Disc golf allows for people of all ages and skill levels to participate. Further research and expert interviews indicate that Iowa is a major hotbed for the sport, leading the nation in courses per capita. A unique and challenging course design enables organizations to host large tournaments that bring in a significant number of competitors along with generating revenue. Don Williams Park contains the space and landscapes to hold a high caliber course and will help Boone County Conservation accomplish their goals of increasing park usage and community involvement in conservation.

]]> As part of his graduate capstone project, Sports & Recreation management student Chris Gelhaus provided recommendations for the reuse of a historic school gymnasium in Essex, Iowa.
