Build upon the “available property” inventory database created in PC02 and the Data Sciences club exercise (Spring 2023, UW-Tacoma AI Club) to deliver a visual map of potentially developable property parcels for housing across the county, with particular focus on these 11 communities: Long Beach (municipality), Ilwaco (municipality), South Bend (municipality), Raymond (municipality), Ocean Park area, Seaview, Chinook, Naselle, Bay Center, Tokeland/North Cove, Menlo, and Unincorporated Pacific County. The visualization tool should be built upon readily available software (ideally, open-source without fees/restrictions, or alternatively, available commercially without undue licensing fees without requiring extensive training or operating expertise). Include documentation detailing user instructions and any necessary maintenance.
Additionally, develop a methodology whereby the underlying database supporting the property inventory can be updated. That is, can existing databases with county-wide parcel information and/or real estate listings be mined semi-automatically on some periodic basis (monthly, quarterly) to update the foundation data from which the visualization maps are based? If updates cannot possibly be fully push-button, then prescribe what manual intervention and/or data uploads are required.

The Regional Patapsco Greenway (RPG) project ascertains the potential economic impact of adding shared-use pathways connected to a network of shared-use pathways between the following destinations: Baltimore City’s Inner Harbor; the existing BWI Trail; Elkridge; historic Ellicott City; Catonsville; the existing Grist Mill Trail. Currently, the Grist Mill Trail, between Ellicott City and Elkridge, starts at Elkridge but does not extend into Ellicott City. Howard County’s Office of Transportation wants to extend the Grist Mill Trail into Historic Ellicott City and Catonsville, as well as extending it south to the existing BWI Trail and to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. These extensions are expected to drive tourist traffic to the connected nodes, and to improve business revenue and growth, reduce congestion, improve public health, improve air quality, and provide recreational pathways for non-motorized traffic (see Figure 1). This report researches the economic impact of similar projects on their communities, and will help evaluate the potential benefits of building the regional pathway network. This report reviews impacts on public health, property values, congestion, air quality, tourism, sales revenue and potential business accruement. The resulting compiled data shows the potential economic impact if this network of shared-use pathways were to be completed. Data was gathered from multiple sources, analyzed, and used to make projections about the potential economic impact of building the shared-use pathway. Current economic data was gathered from Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Business Analysis Online. Scholarly articles and previous impact studies were used to make projections based on the ESRI data. Specifically, the ESRI data was gathered from a quarter mile on either side of the proposed RPG pathway public health, congestion, air quality, tourism, business revenue, and business accrual data (see figure 2) were compared to the economic impact studies. Based on the research, extrapolations were made to predict the impact of building the RPG project.

The project’s goal is to build an interactive website in the form of a Content Management System (CMS) that would engage the interest of the public and stakeholders in Ellicott City. The architecture students of UMD, under the umbrella of the Partnership for Action Learning in Sustainability (PALS), came up with design proposals and illustrations for the redevelopment of Ellicott City in Howard County and wish to publicize it on an online platform rather than having a conventional report. The students, led by their studio professors, have also collected research on urban design theories and techniques in the context of Ellicott City. If designed, taking into consideration all the requirements, the website will also address the historic city’s issues in relation to transit, urban revitalization, and site flooding etc. The project also includes organization of the documentation provided by the students and its incorporation into the website. The final deliverable of the project will be a website which accomplishes the above-mentioned goals. This document gives an overview of the project requirements for this project which is a part of INFM 737 Capstone Experience at the College of Information Studies, University of Maryland.
