This project aims to examine labor market disparities affecting vulnerable populations—women, youth, migrants, LGBT individuals, people with disabilities, and ethnic minorities—in the Metropolitan Area of Bucaramanga (AMB). By employing a quantitative approach, the research seeks to identify labor market gaps, understand the underlying determinants, and propose policy interventions to enhance inclusion. The study focuses on systemic factors such as economic, educational, business, and cultural elements that contribute to labor market exclusion.

Led by Álvaro Javier Vargas Villamizar from the Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga (UNAB), the research team includes experts working to generate actionable insights and policy recommendations. This project will provide a data-driven foundation for public policy aimed at promoting equitable labor market participation for all societal groups.

El Social Behavior and Experimental Economics Lab (Social BEE Lab) es un laboratorio de la Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga (UNAB), creado en colaboración con la Universidad de Nueva York en Abu Dabi (NYUAD).

Este laboratorio se dedica a realizar estudios sobre el comportamiento humano y su impacto en los procesos de toma de decisiones, utilizando protocolos y análisis de datos cuantitativos y cualitativos. Es el primer laboratorio de este tipo en la región y posiciona a la UNAB como un referente en investigación en ciencias económicas.

Las investigaciones y actividades del laboratorio fortalecerán las relaciones con universidades, organizaciones empresariales y sociales, así como con la comunidad en general. Esta iniciativa ha permitido obtener recursos económicos significativos para financiar las investigaciones y cubrir la participación de los estudiantes en los experimentos.

Aunque la audiencia inicial del laboratorio son los estudiantes de la UNAB, el Social BEE Lab tiene como objetivo abordar las necesidades de investigación en ciencias del comportamiento del nororiente de Colombia y fomentar la cooperación internacional.

This project aims to investigate gender differences in susceptibility to corruption through laboratory experiments conducted with students from two Colombian universities (i.e. UNAB and UFPS). The primary hypothesis is that women exhibit lower susceptibility to embezzlement owing to their risk aversion and pro-social values. The relative importance of these factors is not yet clear, though.

The research team, led by Dr. Giovanna Rodríguez-García from UNAB and Dr. Liliana Bastos Osorio from UFPS, with contributions from international expert Dr. Robert Gillanders from Dublin City University (DCU), will conduct experiments to analyze behavioral factors influencing gender-specific reactions to corruption. The project seeks to generate high-impact international publications and strengthen the research capabilities of Colombian universities to conduct social experiments in laboratories.

The project aims to ecologically rescue La Piedad Lagoon and its channels to reduce economic and health impacts, conflicts over water, biodiversity, and ecosystem services loss, and to avoid reducing family and sports recreation spaces. This Lagoon is in Cuautitlán Izcalli, in the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City (ZMCM).
The project will allow the construction of a new model of urban-rural development based on sustainable water management that fosters green economic development based on the conservation of the Lagoon.
The project began in 2018 and, throughout these years, has built solid relationships with the diverse actors involved. In 2023, this intervention integrated the 鶹Ƶ approach to generate the knowledge required to advance the project based on the results of the fieldwork conducted by teachers and students from Metropolitan Aunotomous University. These activities were conducted together with the ejidos of San José Huilango and San Francisco Tepojaco, community organizations, and the local government of Cuautitlan Izcalli. In addition to generating new knowledge, activities were conducted to train social actors on how to build and maintain wetlands.
The Teaching Learning Units (UEA) selected to integrate into the project La Piedad Lagoon include:
• The collection and analysis of water samples in the Lagoon, canals, and surrounding areas to identify the presence of biological and chemical contaminants. Students from the UEA Analytical Chemistry Laboratory will participate in this activity, whose teaching objectives are sampling and analyzing water quality.
• The students of Qualitative Data Collection Techniques conducted the preparation and collection of first-source information from the inhabitants around the Lagoon and the ejidatarios.
The objective of this course is to teach different methodologies for qualitative research. Based on these interviews, information related to health impacts due to the pollution of the Lagoon, the species present, and the economic and recreational activities carried out before the contamination of this water body were documented.
• Develop photographic and video inventories of the current contamination conditions in the Lagoon. Students from the audiovisual production and post-production course are participating in this activity. They will work on a short documentary that will serve as a diagnosis of the lagoon’s water problem.

The Zero-Waste towards a Sustainable Community project was created to help the community to establish waste management programme that best suit the community, trains the community on best practices of waste management toward zero waste, and increase community awareness on waste management. The Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has collaborated with Penang Green Council (PGC) to meet the goals of the project by working with the community at Balik Pulau, Penang.
The community at Balik Pulau, Penang is located at the southwest of Penang Island with almost 23,559 of population size and mainly occupied by older persons. This community is in the sub-urban area of Penang Island and is about twelve miles from the Universiti Sains Malaysia. The community was led by the head of village Kampung Perlis, Balik Pulau, Penang. The collaboration was made with the community’s representative, head of village by sending an official letter to invite the community to collaborate in this project.
The students from Public Sector Economics (SEU335E) and Tourism Economics (SEU338E) courses from the university were invited to assist the community with the implementation for the whole of training activities as a group. The students were used the project activities as their case study that required them to fulfill their field work task. The students also have involved in the meeting between the university, the city partner, and the community to discuss more on activities for that suit the community.

Sullivan County and Sullivan, IN identified a need to increase tourism to the county and incorporated city limits. Seven students in ECON351 were tasked with performing SWOT analyses of Sullivan County’s tourism industry and providing recommendations to improve tourism. Three dimensions of tourism were analyzed: Eco-Tourism, Entertainment, and Historical/Heritage. Recommendations for improving tourism centered on these three facilities, improving social media accounts, preservation and educational opportunities, billboard usage, and more.

Trash discarded on urban lands frequently makes its way into streams, creeks, rivers, and eventually
the ocean, as rainstorms wash it into gutters and storm drains. This trash pollutes California waters and
adversely affects beneficial uses that support aquatic life, wildlife, recreation, water supplies, and public
health.
In 2015, the State Water Resources Control Board adopted an Amendment to the Water Quality Control
Plan for Ocean Waters of California (Ocean Plan) to Control Trash emitted into waterways (Part 1 Trash
Provision of the Water Quality Control Plan for Inland Surface Waters, Enclosed Bays, and Estuaries or ISWEBE
Plan). Collectively referred to as “the Trash Amendments,” the policy objective is to provide statewide
consistency for the regulatory approach to protect aquatic life and public health beneficial uses and reduce
environmental issues associated with trash in state waters, while focusing limited resources on high trash
generating areas. Put simply, the California Ocean Plan prohibits trash exceeding five millimeters in size
from discharge into any waterway in California. The Trash Amendments of the Ocean Plan are implemented
through National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permits (Phase I, Phase II, Industrial
General Permit and Construction General Permit and individual Permits), and are not enforceable until
incorporated into a Permit. The City of San Marcos (COSM) is a NPDES Phase I Permittee.

]]> The City of Springfield faces deteriorating street conditions due to a steady
decline in transportation funding. The City believes a possible solution to this
problem is to improve its local streets with funding from residential property
assessments. However, to encourage property owners to bear the costs of
improving roads, the City would like to better understand the value of local street
improvements. This paper surveys the existing literature on amenity valuation
and infrastructure investment and proposes a hedonic price regression to
estimate the impact local street conditions have on residential house prices. Our
results suggest better street conditions have a positive effect on Springfield
house prices when property values exceed a minimum sales price threshold.
Based on these findings, we conduct a cost-benefit analysis of local street
improvements and suggest additional considerations for the City of Springfield.

]]> The City of Delano seeks to increase the energy efficiency of its public infrastructure to reduce energy use and costs. Students will collaborate on two projects: 1) a benchmarking study of public buildings and 2) an analysis for street lighting upgrades. Based on their analysis, students will propose potential improvements/upgrades to public buildings and evaluate the technical and political feasibility of the proposed upgrades; students will also determine options for updating the City’s street lighting to LED lighting and the payoff times for different updating scenarios. Students will provide these policy recommendations to the City in a report, and students will also create a dynamic analytical tool for the City that can be updated as parameter values change or additional data become available. Students will also present their work to the Delano City Council or city staff. Students’ work will also assist the City in advancing their GreenStep City rating through increasing the energy efficiency of public infrastructure.

Students determined that the City could generate net savings of $854,000 over the next ten years with efficiency upgrades.
The City has integrated these efficiency upgrades into their capital improvement plan.
Delano’s City Council will review this plan and determine when the projects will be completed with respect to budgetary constraints each year.

]]> Students will perform a detailed study of the economic benefits that the region gains from its water resources. The study will analyze waterdependent businesses, tourism activities, and special events. Analysis will examine exported economic sectors; impacts on hotels, restaurants, airports, and other hospitality industries; increased tax revenues for local governments; and other impacts. This project will be undertaken alongside the Water Quality Improvement Plan course in Landscape Architecture.
