The San Diego Energy Equity Campus at Valencia Park San Diego is a place that will celebrate the culture and the vibrancy of its local community by uniting in an effort to provide clean, affordable energy, financial prosperity and a place to gather. In light of this mission, our team will be focusing on the Adinkra symbols to communicate this idea. These symbols are a visual language that communicates the proverbial wisdom of Ghana, a wisdom that is needed in these challenging times. These Ghanaian symbols represent a cultural heritage that many people in the Valencia Park share, but even if they are not a shared cultural heritage they are all messages and ideals that are universal. Anyone can appreciate and get behind the ideals of communities coming together, the need for leadership, compassion and wisdom. It is even more important to stress that these values are a cultural heritage of communities of concern in Valencia Park and that their contribution is both valued and essential to community growth.

Ripon College’s Art Management 377 class captured murals, tombstones, sculptures, and benches that are important to Wisconsin Rapid’s history. This spreads awareness of the county’s impact on history. Some images explain the importance of the train that ran through town, the progression of medicine from 1855-2007, and depictions of the creation of the paper mill/dam.

The Town of Clarkdale is home to a community of artists and creatives who host an annual art show. In order to cultivate a cohesive community of arts, Clarkdale is considering the development of an arts incubator to provide physical and/or social infrastructure to support local artists. Graduate students from The Design School will explore peer community art incubators programs, recommend potential operating and funding structures, and identify critical partners for the development of a community arts incubator to support local artists.

The TTU Flute Choir, directed by Lisa Garner Santa, Professor of Flute, has created a partnership program with the Carillon Life Center titled “Music and You.” Students are working directly with the Carillon Life Center to explore the relationship between performer and audience, programming for specific populations, and the successful implementation of the logistics behind a musical production. The Carillon Residents are the audience for the performance experience and will provide the inspiration for the musical programming choice.

The TTU Flute Choir, comprised of 20 flute students directed by Lisa Garner Santa, Professor of Flute and School of Music Associate Director of Learning and Teaching, has created a partnership program with the Carillon Life Center titled “Music and You.” Students work directly with the Carillon Life Center to explore the relationship between performer and audience, programming for special populations, and the successful implementation of the logistics behind a musical production. It is common knowledge that medical research supports positive correlations between music and the aging mind, as well as the positive impact of integrating aging populations with younger ones.

CSUSM students from AMD 421, Art and Social Change, under the direction of Dr. Kristin Moss and the Economic Development Team from San Marcos, California have been tasked with putting together a research report to aid in the development of a comprehensive public art master plan for San Marcos and the North City neighborhood. This project provides resources and tools to the City of San Marcos Office of Economic Development so they can move forward with plans for public art and to support cultural and economic growth. It includes best practices, existing design ideas for public art, student designs, tools, resources and survey data. Included are original design ideas for public art specific to the North City Neighborhood. These original ideas are examples, they may also become a part of any future marketing plans for North City. In 2019, at a Tech Terrace Neighborhood Association meeting, it was brought to attention that the Lubbock Power & Light substation on Elgin Avenue created an unpleasant eyesore. After consulting with city officials, it was decided that a mural could be painted on the walls surrounding the building. Professor Andrew Martin of the TTU School of Art then committed his senior painting class students to work with Hutchinson Middle School students to design the mural. The mural project is a mutually beneficial project that allows TTU School of Art students, as well as Hutchinson Middle School students, hands-on experience, all the while giving the community an aesthetically pleasing work of art.

The inaugural North by Northeast Arts Festival took place on October 16th & 17th. Artists and the arts are often the foundation of up and coming, vibrant communities so in order to elevate the profile of the north and east communities of Lubbock, the NXNE Festival focused on celebrating the arts. Grant Gerlich from the Office of Outreach & Engagement worked with the TTU School of Art, College of Architecture, North Lubbock Neighborhood Association, and the East Lubbock Art House to produce this celebration of the arts.

The festival is based off of the Art All Night festival in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Art All Night helped reinvent that neighborhood from a forgotten steel and manufacturing hub, to one of the most desirable communities in the city, all thanks to the arts. The North by Northeast festival’s plan was to do just that for the north and east communities of Lubbock.

This document outlines work done by graduate students in the Public Folklore and Cultural
Programming course in the Arts & Administration Department during the Winter term 2010 and provides recommendations to the Gresham Redevelopment Commission for further study. The objective of this work was to build community identity in the Rockwood neighborhood
by beginning the process of collecting the cultural assets important to Rockwood residents.
Throughout the term the graduate students met with local community leaders in Rockwood to
discuss previous community building initiatives and their issues. This information allowed us to understand what problems arise when trying to begin a fully inclusive community planning process.

The students’ task is to identify relevant and potential risks and disasters and develop a risk analysis which future classes will be able to build off of in order to develop the Borough’s recovery and resiliency planning

]]> The Community Cultural Development class in the Arts and Administration Department at the University of Oregon was asked to present a plan to the City of Albany, Oregon, that would help the city develop a cultural inventory. Throughout the term, students researched about the city using online resources and in-person interviews. Students also surveyed a broad range of cultural inventory methodology and examples from around the country. The class created a list of ac on steps for Albany to complete their own cultural inventory. They documented the input of leaders in the community on local assets and project design. Students also compiled a list of preliminary cultural assets. The class makes recommenda ons to include youth engagement, communica on, and informal and occupa onal arts in Albany’s cultural inventory. Community cultural development is a collaborative effort between artists and community members to articulate a community’s identity, concerns,
and aspirations through the arts and communication media. The Community Cultural Development class in the Arts and Administration Program at the University of Oregon was asked to develop recommenda ons that would help the city envision and implement a cultural inventory. A cultural inventory is a list of the arts- and culture-oriented assets that enrich community life in the city.
