]]> A City agency practitioner working on a large New York City infrastructure project requiring the importation of significant amounts of soil approached Town+Gown:NYC with a project idea about how to communicate, to the public, that re-use of soil excavated from other City projects would not only be environmentally good, but also safe. Around that time, Pratt’s Design Corps put out a call for communications design project ideas, leading to this Fall 2019 semester Town+Gown:NYC research project. With participating Urban Resource Recovery Working Group members, the communications design students developed their individual communications strategy, with ideas for messaging the environmental benefits and safety of closing the soil loop, color palette and design collateral for construction hoardings, subway ads, educational brochures aimed the general public and at design and construction professionals, and a website. Initially aimed at the general public, environmental sustainability and safety, the design brief expanded to include other stakeholders such as the design and construction professionals working on City initiatives.
