This project maps street light density in Pacific Grove. Mapping street light density would be useful in determining when deciding where to construct or remove street lights. Sometimes in cities, there is too much or too little light on certain roads. Bigger roads that generally have more traffic need more light and quieter neighborhood roads usually have less lighting. It is important that a sufficient number of streetlights are placed throughout the city to help maintain the safety of citizens at night.

The purpose of this project was to identify the changes that have occurred since the last tree inventory that the city of Pacific Grove conducted and the one we did this semester. Once the data was collected, we used it to analyze changes in trees, the percent change in the trees, areas of potential change and the area of lowest tree density.

This project uses ArcGIS techniques to create a plan to revive the native tree species in the Monterey Peninsula area. Save the Trees will analyze the tree density in Pacific Grove and determine areas suitable for new trees to be planted. In doing so, the team will find the areas with the richest and poorest areas of vegetation in Pacific Grove, as well.

A Plastic Ban Ordinance will go into effect in January of 2020 in the City of San Juan Bautista, and our research sought to make businesses aware of the ban, identify questions and concerns about the ban, and help businesses by recommending alternatives for single-use plastics that are cost-efficient. This research consists of mixed methods such as semi-formal interviews, phone interviews, and surveys. The survey will allow us to understand what type of single-use plastics eateries in San Juan Bautista are using and if any businesses have begun transition to single-use plastic alternatives. It is our hope that the collected data allows us to identify resources that would assist businesses in complying with the Plastic Ban Ordinance. Our course of action will begin by gathering resources and materials that will support business compliance for the ban by finding cost-efficient plastic alternatives.

Dr. Fernandez’s Infrastructure Systems class partnered with San Juan Bautista and Pacific Grove to analyze cities throughout California which similarly compared to our partner cities. Students collected
data for various categories including general government, transportation, housing, tourism & recreation,
water, weather, sustainability, facilities, finances, and fire/EMF. Students worked to find cities that
similarly compared to five target cities of their choosing and our partner cities in order to aim towards
more successful city planning. This paper summarizes students data collection and analysis, including
additional analysis in regards to our partner cities. This summary works to find the most similar cities to
our partner cities based off of the entire class’ data collection in order to make logical future steps for city
planning. Future steps include completing the data set for all target cities and checking for validity for all
resources and data inputted; this project can be divided into four parts for each partner city in lieu of
additional target cities, one being public works which can include all categories, transportation,
recreation, and approved budget for 2020-2021.
