The Village of Egg Harbor is located on Lake Michigan and has a permanent population of about 250 residents. Approximatly 40% of the population is above the age of 60 and in retirement.

Because of its location on lakeside property, Egg Harbor sees a dramatic increase in population during the summer months due to tourism. Many businesses provide recreational summer activities such as boating, kayaking, gol ing, and many other activities. Seasonal employees lock to the village to provide ervices to the tourists during the summer months, but leave as soon as the tourism season ends.

Because the demographics of the village consists of an older and retired population, the cost of living is quite high. The seasonal employees hired by these businesses are often a younger and less inancially robust population; therefore, they are unable to afford the typical housing units available for rent in Egg Harbor and many of the employees only need housing for a few months. During the summer season, the need for affordable housing units increases. Businesses in the area have expressed interest in partnering with the affordable housing unit owners to provide for their employees.

The Village of Egg Harbor has provided a 1.4 acre plot of land on Harbor School Rd. to build affordable housing units as shown in Figure 1 below. They have provided a budget of $1,000,000 for the design and construction of the units along with necessary additions such as wells, stormwater retention basins, and grading of the site.

This preliminary engineering design report explores four designs for affordable housing and identi ies a geotechnical, hydrological, structural, and construction analysis of each alternative as well as a recommendation for the most feasible design option.

Door County is a peninsula surrounded by Lake Michigan, one of the most essentialbodies of water in the United States. Plastic and styrofoam pollution has been an increasingproblem over the past few decades. It is imperative for coastal municipalities to advocate for thehealth of the Great Lakes, and this can be accomplished in part through eliminating single-useplastics and styrofoam. Egg Harbor was the first community to participate in the Green TierLegacy Community program conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Asa Green Tier Legacy Community, Egg Harbor is committed to taking sustainable actions to builda better future. This internship set out to assist the Green Tier Taskforce in operationalizing theinitiative to encourage Egg Harbor businesses to transition away from single-use plastics andtoward compostable alternatives.

The Village of Egg Harbor is currently updating its Comprehensive Plan. Because parking impacts tourism, local businesses, traffic congestion, and walkability, it is important to identify and address parking related issues impacting the downtown study area. However, any discussion of parking must take place within the context of the community’s overall vision for the future. Parking must support and align with broader community goals, and not simply be seen as a stand-alone issue. Previous studies have identified multiple community goals related to parking and mobility. This project was conducted by the State Smart Transportation Initiative.

Students evaluate ways to reconstruct highway 42 inorder to sustainably build infrastructure in Egg Harbor. The reconstruction would include safe bike lines to encourage bike riding and reduce carbon emmissions. The highway would also include baisins to catch runoff and treat it before depositing into Green Bay.

Students from several classes devise ways to upgrade and renew affordable housing in Door County that have been deemed poor quality. These units will use solar energy to reduce the cost for residents. The students were sure to provide childcare options, green spaces, safe parking, and access to highways.
