The Town of Miami is a historic mining community situated in Arizona’s Copper Corridor. With a growing population driven by renewed mining activity, the Town is seeking to position itself as a sustainable and attractive destination for both visitors and new residents. To help realize this vision, the Town of Miami is initiating a series of recreational and infrastructure projects designed to enhance the quality of life, foster community connection, and encourage outdoor activities. Key projects include the development of a disc golf course and skate park at Bullion Plaza. Such developments which will provide inclusive spaces for all ages, as well as the construction of a pump track in partnership, designed to connect with nearby high-elevation trail systems, thereby further expanding Miami’s recreational offerings and enhancing its outdoor tourism appeal. Undergraduate students from the School of Community Resources and Development will conduct interviews with key community stakeholders and develop tourism planning and strategies for the Town.

The Town of Miami is a historic mining community in the Copper Corridor region of Arizona. Situated in a mountainous region, the community experiences more extreme weather conditions than other areas of the state, including fires, floods, and landslides, with local impacts often exacerbated by the topography of the watershed in relation to commercial, industrial, and residential areas of the community. Most notably, the wash directly adjacent to Miami’s downtown corridor, Sullivan Street, frequently floods after rain events and causes damage to the surrounding area. As the Town is planning for a new era of growth and development as more residents move to the area to support mining operations in the region, Miami is interested in identifying opportunities to implement green infrastructure strategies and design solutions to more effectively manage the movement of water throughout the watershed while also improving the aesthetics of Downtown Miami. Therefore, the Town of Miami will collaborate with Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BSLA) capstone students to map and analyze key characteristics of the watershed, identify and design opportunities for green infrastructure strategies and elements throughout the downtown corridor of Miami.

The Town of Miami is a historic mining community in the Copper Corridor region of Arizona. Situated in a mountainous region, the community experiences more extreme weather conditions than other areas of the state, including fires, floods, landslides, and other related natural hazards as well as technological hazards such as cybersecurity concerns. As a smaller, more rural community, the Town of Miami relies on collaboration with neighboring cities and towns, as well as local, state, and federal partners to respond to emergency situations. To improve hazard mitigation, disaster response and recovery efforts locally and regionally, the Town of Miami collaborated with graduate students in the School of Public Affairs (SPA) Emergency Management/Homeland Security (EMHS) program to identify critical factors that may contribute to and support emergency management planning and response, then develop After Action Reports to provide strategies and recommendations for future emergency planning efforts.

The Town of Miami, located at the heart of the Copper Corridor, is planning for a new era of growth and development as more residents move to the area to support mining operations in the region. Downtown Miami is the center of the community, as it is home to Town Hall, a variety of local businesses, Miami Memorial Park, places of worship, and historic buildings, staircases, and other elements integral to the community’s history and sense of place. As Miami strives to balance the history of the community with the need for development and improved services, the Town seeks a playbook for how to revitalize its downtown area to promote environmental, social, and economic resilience. Therefore, the Town of Miami collaborated with a team of Master of Urban and Environmental Planning (MUEP) Planning Workshop students through the ASU Project Cities program to inventory downtown parcels, facilitate a community preference survey, and create a playbook to guide Miami’s downtown revitalization efforts now and into the future.

As the Town of Miami continues to grow, the Town Manager and staff need updated demographic, economic, education, health, and housing data to inform planning and development. This information will provide new opportunities for the Town to apply for grants and address ongoing community challenges. Graduate urban planning students leveraged quantitative skills to gather and synthesize data from a variety of sources to create a “state of Miami” for the Town. Additionally, students used the data to identify planning problems, such as housing affordability, and complete a focused analysis to propose solutions.
