The City of Lemon Grove seeks to incorporate more natural elements and green spaces throughout the Downtown Village area of the city. The goal of this project was to propose additional green spaces to the Downtown area of Lemon Grove and create a wastewater treatment facility to obtain water to irrigate these proposed areas. Throughout this project, the Ten State Standards (Health Research Inc., Health Education Services Division, 2014) and the California Code of Regulations were used as guidelines (California Office of Administrative Law, 1990).

The City of Lemon Grove is a continuously developing community that is actively seeking new ways of implementing sustainable initiatives. Community involvement is critical concerning reformation of current greenery within Lemon Grove. Our team of five students decided to explore the varying perspectives of residents pertaining to the current landscaping conditions of their neighborhoods, parks, and office spaces. Urbanization of developing cities is accompanied by the need to preserve trees and green infrastructure, and our secondary research studied five notable benefits that trees provide for cities such as Lemon Grove. Our chosen topics include reduction of carbon emissions, preservation of urban biodiversity, enhancement of property value, improvement of shade cover, and effects on physical and mental health. After reporting on the advantages that trees bring to urban areas, our team designed questions for current residents that were salient in helping answer our research question; “What methods can we use to find local opportunities for urban green projects and how can we measure the residents’ willingness to actively participate in tree expansion?”. We constructed an online survey using Qualtrics in order to evaluate rankings, capture opinions, and measure enthusiasm to contribute to the expansion of trees in Lemon Grove. After distribution through social media, we were able to collect 69 valid responses which we methodically analyzed using SPSS. Our findings indicate the community aspires to develop better green infrastructure, and most residents are willing to actively assist in the maintenance and fostering of trees for the betterment of their living conditions. We conclude our report with recommendations for the city based on our findings, and a discussion of our limitations that arose throughout our project.

The purpose of this report is to propose sustainable ways to expand the recreation services for the City of Lemon Grove, as well as provide sustainable solutions that revitalize existing recreational offerings. Dr. Jennifer Sheppard’s class—RWS 504 Advanced Professional Writing— investigated a wide range of options to be included in this report. Through gathered surveyed data, students propose that the City of Lemon Grove grows the Recreation Department programming by adding two new community events: an Annual Birthday Bash and a weekly Farmer’s Market. By developing these two events, residents will develop a deeper sense of pride and belonging to their neighborhood that can proudly be shared to attract other San Diego locals to visit the area. The final section of this report discusses the results of an additional survey conducted during the Spring semester of 2022. The survey focused on identifying the recreational interests of Hispanic residents in Lemon Grove, regarding potential new programming opportunities that reflected aspects of Latinx culture and the Spanish language.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the existing design of Broadway/Grove Street Intersection and consider how well it aligns with the local, state, and federal guidelines for roundabouts. Both full-sized and mini-roundabout guidelines were considered. Results of the analysis indicate how features of the current configuration respond to those guidelines, as well as a set of recommendations to improve the conditions based on best management practices.

Following a request from the City of Lemon Grove’s Recreation Department, the students of San Diego State University’s Public Health 603 Behavioral and Social Science in Public Health class created various reports on how to perform an appropriate needs assessment to determine what the Lemon Grove residents need, and then offered options for low-cost programs for the Recreation Department to consider implementing. While a needs assessment could not be conducted during the time frame of the Fall 2021 semester, the options provided are based on the diverse population of Lemon Grove and can be adjusted according to the results of an implemented needs assessment. The class recommends two separate programs: If a greater number of resources can be secured, we recommend implementing an after-school program that focuses on nutrition, physical activity, and mental well-being following homework. If fewer resources are available, we recommend holding recurrent activity classes in the parks of Lemon Grove. Examples for these activities would be Zumba, yoga, tai chi, or arts and crafts. Some funding opportunities are provided, although these largely focus on the after-school program.

This report addresses the City of Lemon Grove’s goal to better understand the needs of seniors and expand recreation opportunities for senior residents. Part one of this report analyzes data drawn from a class survey performed in Dr. Henrike Blumenfeld’s SLHS 580 Communication Processes and Aging Course. Part two of this report presents data gathered from a survey and supplemental phone call interviews with residents of Lemon Grove specifically. A team of students in SLHS 595 Research Practicum (led by Dr. Henrike Blumenfeld and Dr. Jessica Barlow), conducted these surveys and interviews and collected data about current recreation and the top recreation opportunities that seniors in Lemon Grove would like to see offered in their community. Drawing on the combined data, part three of the report proposes a set of low-cost recommendations for the City of Lemon Grove to enhance recreational offerings for seniors. These recommendations have three focuses: current recreational activities, desired recreational activities, and a senior advisory committee.
